Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Helena and a couple of months ago I started my own company called Wonky - the tasty way to rescue food. Wonky creates tasty products made out of food surplus. That way I want to tackle the food waste problem and reduce the 45% of fruits & vegetables that are thrown away in Belgium. Wonky works together with companies in the food industry to rescue their food surplus. We hope to launch the product in retail this october/november. On the one hand, we want to have a direct impact on food waste. On the other hand, we also aim at an indirect impact, increasing the awareness among people around food waste in our own kitchens. I myself am motivated because I want to have a meaningful job with concrete results, that keeps me going every day. The food waste problem is a huge, concrete problem I want to solve.
What competences would make you a good Generation T?
I believe I can bring my enthusiasm to Generation T, my enthusiasm to keep on going and try to change the world day by day. Moreover, I have creative ideas with which I can help the other members of Generation T. And I already have some experience in strategy and marketing, which I achieved in my studies and previous job at Proximus. Oh, and I love to coach others and to motivate them to take the next steps needed to execute their ideas. Finally, I will provide everyone with tasty products made out of food surplus ;-)
Give specific example(s) on how your projects or activities make a difference and initiate change.
As an entrepreneur and founder of Wonky, I want to have both a direct and indirect impact on the food waste problem. 1/3rd of all food is wasted and 45% of all vegetables & fruits is thrown away. Food waste has a major impact on the environment/climate, as we do not only waste the vegetable, but also the preceding process that involved energy, water, manpower, etc. Wonky will intervene there where waste is highest in Flanders, in the food industry. Moreover, Wonky will communicate and initiate campaigns related to food waste, in order to alter the people's mindset. I want to show that the fresh food that is being thrown away is perfect for human consumption and super tasty! Last but not least, I want to give a part of the profit to food distribution initiatives.
