Storyteller for social change

"Good stories can inspire, engage and motivate people to take action."

Who are you?

My name is Maroussia and I am in love with life and with people! I have always been driven by the desire to make the world a better place. I recently launched a project called “Impact Storytelling” where we work with organisations involved in social causes to increase the impact of their work and messages. Before this, I worked for over three years in international organisations, as UN-based reporter then at the European Commission and as environmental policy analyst at OECD.  I learned about the functioning of international organisations and the complex machinery of policy making. But I soon realised that my impact there was limited and that I could contribute much better to social change by working closer to the people.

Why are you part of Generation T?

I am a profoundly idealistic and action-driven person. And above all, I believe in the value of collaboration and mutual inspiration. I want to be part a new generation that is committed to working together for achieving social change. I want to use my experience in international organisations and communication to inspire other people, and raise awareness about global issues. Through Impact Storytelling, I want to support more people and organisations in our joint efforts for increasing social justice and sustainability. Today, every person and local initiative can have large-scale impacts and reach millions of people. Let’s unite our dreams and passions and I have no doubt that together we can achieve great things.

A specific example on how your project or activities make a difference and initiate change:

In the summer of 2015, I realized a short documentary portraying a young Syrian refugee who recently arrived in Berlin walking all the way from Aleppo. Hadi, my protagonist, is a dynamic, ambitious and optimistic guy, to whom many young people in Europe can relate. My movie aims to move away from the stereotyped vision of refugees conveyed in Europe. Through Hadi’s story, I want to improve citizens’ perception of refugees. This, in turn, could contribute to facilitating integration in Europe and encourage policy makers to take necessary steps for addressing the situation. I strongly believe in the power of stories to inspire, engage and motivate people to take action. It is for this reason that I created Impact Storytelling.
