Who are you and what do you do?

I am Dorien Van Dun, almost 30-years old and I take up Marketing & Communications at EFICO, a green coffee trading company, based in Antwerp since 1926 and ranked among the top-ten European coffee trading houses.

The EFICO Group has a longstanding family history and differentiates itself by offering a complete concept throughout the Green Coffee Supply Chain, From Flower to Cup.

Tradition and technology go hand in hand.  Quality, Food Safety, Traceability and Sustainability are our cornerstones.

Sustainability is the starting point of each entity of the EFICO Group. Taking care of our environment, our planet, and our people takes a prominent place within our vision.

You can say responsible entrepreneurship is part of our ‘Coffee Genes’.

When participating to Generation T, I would be aiming to inspire others with the story of EFICO and our experiences, achievements and challenges.

At EFICO, we already actively inform our business partners about the global warming challenge, the measures to take, sustainable sourcing and other sustainability topics.

Being an active member of sustainability initiatives, it is also not only our ambition to be an ambassador, inspirer and catalysator within the coffee industry but also beyond.

By thinking globally and acting locally.

Now is the time to also inform, encourage and activate the “Future”, the youngest generation or Generation T.

What competences would make you a good Generation T?

Whilst working at EFICO as Marketing & Communications specialist, I realized that teamwork makes the dream work. Together you can achieve more. For the different projects, whether it be our EFICO FOUNDATION projects, quality support, internal or external communication matters, you obtain the best results while working in team, exchanging ideas. This framework also translates into our ambition regarding SDG 17 - Partnership for goals. Within Generation T, this would therefore be my most important focus. As Ban Ki-Moon states: “ One of the main lessons learned as UN Secretary-General is that broad partnerships are the key to solve broad challenges.”

Besides being a teamplayer, I am a true coffee enthusiast, an organised and creative go-getter, always eager to learn.

In my view, Integrity, Positivity, Passion, Commitment, Respect, being Open-minded and ensuring Quality are key values to make a difference both in personal and work life.

If participating to Generation T, I would be able to bring in both personal and professional background & experience.

Give specific example(s) on how your projects or activities make a difference and initiate change.

The EFICO team strongly believes in the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) Principles, to which we were the first to sign up to in the sector in 2003.

We put our experience and our knowledge at the service of our customers and partners.

By giving advice and encouraging people, sustainable value chains are created.

Our ambition towards a sustainable coffee supply chain is amongst others reflected in the investment in Seabridge, a unique state-of-the-art sustainable warehouse and distribution center for green coffee in the port of Zeebrugge, where green and high-qualitative logistics prevail.

With the Efico Foundation we make a difference by supporting sustainable multi-stakeholder projects in coffee producing countries with the aim to improve hereby the livelihoods of many.

Our global sustainability strategy focuses on 5 SDGs:

Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12)

Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8)

Affordable and Clean Energy  (SDG 7)

Quality Education (SDG 4)

Global Partnership for Sustainable Development (SDG 17)

Read our ambitions regarding these 5 SDGs more in detail in our most recent UNGC Communication-On-Progress Report, page 5-9, published on

Who inspired you? What made you first passionate about sustainability?

When I started to work at EFICO back in 2008, I was immediately impressed by the vision towards sustainability throughout the entire green coffee supply chain and the concrete actions taken. My passion was sparked then.
