Who are you?
I'm Alexia Leysen, founder of Dagen Zonder Vlees, literally translated as Days Without Meat. It is a trendy Flemish campaign about the ecological impact of our eating habits on the environment. The idea is simple: to eat less meat and fish during the 40 days of the Lent period. Every year, a growing number of people take up the challenge. Together, they try to reduce their collective ecological footprint as much as possible. Why? Because meat consumption is one of the main causes of climate change and since Belgium is ranked in the top 5 of countries with the highest ecological footprint, I want to do something about it. I believe raising awareness is key in the climate problem.
Why are you part of Generation T?
I am really passionate about sustainability and I think I can think in a creative way about how to handle a problem.
A specific example on how your project or activities make a difference and initiate change:
Last year more than 55.000 people in Flanders joined the campaign and ate less meat and fish during 40 days. We use famous participants to inspire more people to join. With the media attention that we had we created a lot of awareness about the ecological impact of our eating habits. Furthermore, participants let us know each year that the campaign changed their eating habits on the long term as well. So we are very happy with the results of Dagen Zonder Vlees.
